October 2020: Support Purple Leash Project for National Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Purina is asking pet lovers to support the Purple Leash Project to help bring an end to domestic abuse in all forms – which often includes both people AND pets. An unfortunate byproduct of the pandemic is that many victims have been forced to quarantine with their violent partners. Initial police reports from major cities suggest an increase in domestic violence incidents between 10% and 20%. Why pets? Currently only about 10 percent of domestic violence shelters are equipped to house pets. As a result, almost half (48%) of domestic violence victims will stay with their abuser rather than leave their pet behind. Through Purple Leash Project, Purina is creating safe havens for domestic violence survivors with pets who have the will to leave but nowhere to go. During October, Purina asks you to Take the Lead for survivors and pets by share a picture with your pet on Instagram and/or Facebook to show the unbreakable bond between pets and people, share information about Purple Leash Project and encourage others to do the same; Participating in Purple Thursday on October 22 by wearing purple (the color for domestic violence awareness) to show support for survivors. Post a photo of yourself using the hashtags #PurpleThursday and #PurpleLeashProject to join others in this movement; Consider donating to RedRover to support Purple Leash Project. Funds will help transform domestic violence shelters into pet-friendly spaces so pets and people can heal together. Visit PurpleLeashProject.com for more information.
