While moving to a new home can take a lot of work, it is even more stressful when you add a dog into the equation. After all, you have more items to pack and another being’s emotional needs to consider.

Because summertime is a popular time for families to relocate homes, here are 5 tips for moving to a new home with your dog. These tips will make the entire experience more enjoyable for both you and your pooch.

5 Tips for Moving to a New Home With Your Dog

1. Make a List of Dog Essentials

Remember that your dog has many needs. Obviously, your pup will not be able to communicate those needs, so you have to anticipate them.

It will help to think about the needs that you and your dog have in common. You need food, hygiene items, and first-aid supplies.

There are also many needs that you and your dog do not share. For instance, dogs do not need clothes or mobile devices. However, they do need leashes and pet cages, food and water dishes, and a warm, soft bed for rest.

2. Spoil Your Dog

Remember that your dog has passions and hobbies. Does your dog enjoy playing fetch? Make sure to pack a frisbee and a ball. Also, pack your dog’s favorite chew toy.

Even though your dog does not need clothes, your furry friend might look cute in dog outfits. It would be a great idea to surprise your dog with new toys and clothes. Don’t be afraid to spoil your companion!

3. Stay Organized

In order to ensure that you pack everything your dog will need to feel comfortable moving away, be sure to stay organized.

You can pack your dog’s luggage in a box or bag with a cute paw print on it, or you can simply label it with your dog’s name.

Being organized will make the moving transition easier for everyone, especially if you are moving out of state.

4. Introduce Your Dog to the New Home Before the Move

When you took your dog home for the first time, think about how she reacted. Was it a smooth transition, or did your dog constantly bark in disapproval?

To get a clear idea of how your dog will react to this move, it will help to let her see the new home a few weeks before your move-in date.

If your dog does not seem to like the house the first time, you can take her back there a few more times to get used to the idea of moving. It might also help to let your dog explore dog parks nearby.

5. Keep Your Dog Entertained During the Move

Just like children, dogs have very short attention spans. Make sure that your dog has a chew toy to play with during the big move.

If you are going for a long drive, make sure to take breaks every hour or so to give your dog time out of the car. It can be fun for both of you to explore the sights on your journey.

These are just a few tips for moving to a new home with your dog. Remember to have patience with your dog and enjoy making new memories together.
