One of the highlights of summertime in the USA is our grand Independence Day celebration. Whether you enjoy the traditional 4th of July barbeque, a pool party with friends, or a spectacular fireworks display, there’s a little something for everyone.

Everyone but your dog, that is.

Most dogs do not care for all the pomp and circumstance surrounding our nation’s birthday celebration, and it should be noted that more dogs go missing on the 4th of July than any other day of the year.

That means it’s certainly in order to take some precautions when it comes to preparing your dog for 4th of July anxiety. Today I’m sharing a few tips to help you and your dog have a glorious Independence Day, no matter what’s on the agenda.

8 Tips to Prepare Your Dog for 4th of July Anxiety

1. Drown out the noise.

Many dogs are terrified of loud noises such as thunder and fireworks. If your dog is one of them, it’s important to create an environment where she won’t have to hear all the noise.

I recommend keeping your dog inside during any fireworks activities and keeping the TV or radio loud enough to muffle the sounds coming from outside.

2. Stay close.

Not going out on the 4th? Your dog will appreciate that. Stay close and provide lots of cuddles and snuggles to alleviate your dog’s tension and anxiety. Having you nearby will build confidence in your pet.

3. Create a safe space.

If your dog is inside while you’re outdoors celebrating with family and friends, make sure she’s in a safe, secure space.

I like to set my dogs up in the basement, where they’re less likely to hear fireworks. I always include their beds, a few toys, and of course some yummy treats to make them feel comfortable indoors.

4. Dress up.

Have you ever tried a Thundershirt on your dog? These can be really helpful on the 4th of July, as well as on those stormy nights when the rain and thunder has your dog in a tizzy.

5. Get out of town.

If you’re not interested in a big Independence Day celebration, it’s a great time to think about heading out of town for a few days. Have you tried camping with your dog?

6. CBD oil might work.

CBD (Cannabidiol) oil works to calm and relax a lot of dogs. Chat with your veterinarian about whether or not this is a viable option for your dog.

7. Stay indoors.

If you and your dog are staying inside during the fireworks, in addition to all that snuggling and cuddling, try closing the blinds and settling down on the couch. Remain as calm and normal as possible, as this will help your dog to relax as well.

8. Try counter-conditioning.

Get your dog accustomed to these loud noises by introducing noises and then rewarding her for staying calm, as demonstrated below.
