During the winter months, keeping your home clean becomes more intense with the increase in snow and rain that finds its way inside.

Add a dog to that equation and you have the perfect formula for mess-making. If you live with a dog, you know exactly what I mean.

So what can you do in these circumstances? If you don’t want to settle for a dirty, messy living situation, there are steps you can take to help maintain a pristine interior. Here’s how to keep your home clean with a dog in the winter.

4 Tips to Keep Your Dog-Friendly Home Clean in the Winter

1. Grooming

Your first line of defense is to keep your dog well-groomed. By doing this, you are tackling the untidiness at its source.

Brush your dog’s fur regularly to reduce shedding and bathe her once a month (or when she gets muddy). You can catch all that hair and dirt that would normally fall around your home before it spreads and becomes a struggle to clean.

Your floors and furniture will thank you for the effort.

2. Entryway Cleaning

Because a large concern in the winter season is the slush and mire, having an entryway armed with safeguards against them is a must.

Put an entryway mat down right inside the doorway where your dog can step in without soiling the floor. Keep a towel close at hand so that you can wipe off any excess wetness before it soaks into the floor and furniture as well.

3. Covering

Another layer of armor you can apply to your home is to cover up areas of high traffic. Take your sofa, for instance. Left alone, it can quickly become covered in canine scratch marks and stains from whatever they stepped in outside.

However, a sturdy furniture cover will help you manage this situation. Make sure to get one that’s machine washable so that when it starts looking grimy, you can easily throw it in the wash.

As for your floors, you can put down some durable rugs to act as another kind of cover there. You can also protect the rugs from pet damage so they stay looking fresh even while they are serving as shields.

4. Paw Cleaning

If your dog will cooperate enough to let you clean her paws when she comes in from outdoors, I highly recommend a paw cleaner. This will help keep your pooch’s paws clean no matter what time of year it is, and your dog might even enjoy it.

With all these measures taken, you will have a multi-faceted defense against winter precipitation and your pooch’s romping.
