When you’re planning your next trip, making arrangements for your dog is just as important as making arrangements for the rest of the family.

Whether your pooch is coming with you to a pet-friendly destination or enjoying a staycation while you’re away, of course you want her to be happy and well taken care of during your trip.

The next time you’re making travel plans, check out these 4 options for your dog while you’re on vacation.

4 Options for Your Dog While You’re on Vacation

1. Bring Her Along

If you’re lucky—and if you plan it right—you might be able to take your dog along with you on vacation. More and more hotels, restaurants, shops, and other attractions are welcoming dogs, either for a small fee or for free. You can find a few of them here.

When planning your trip, keep an eye out for dog-friendly locations to visit. You can also plan a trip to the great outdoors for your next vacation, which means your pup will have a great time staying with you in your RV or at your campground.

Always be sure to have updated ID tags and health tags when traveling with your dog.

2. Traditional Boarding

Sometimes you just can’t make the arrangements to bring your pup along. If this happens, you can make sure she gets all the love and attention she needs while you’re away in a certified boarding facility.

Do your research and call ahead to make sure you’re leaving your dog somewhere with an attentive staff and plenty of space to play. Ask dog-loving friends for recommendations. Read online reviews.

I also recommend visiting the board facility in person before leaving your dog there. If you just stop by one afternoon, you’ll get an uncensored look at how things are run.

Your dog may really like a boarding facility, especially if she’s sociable and gets along with other dogs. She might even get to make some new friends during her stay!

3. Pet Sitter

If you want to keep your dog in your home while you’re gone, pet sitting is another option. You can hire a professional pet sitter to come to your home to feed, walk, and take care of your dog.

There are many different ways to find the right pet sitter for your pup. Do some research to see if any websites or apps list available sitters near you.

One of the benefits of pet sitting is that you can schedule a meet-and-greet with your potential sitter to learn more about her and see how she interacts with your dog.

Plus, depending on who you hire, your pet sitter can double as a house sitter while you’re traveling.

4. Family Friend

While professional services are great care options for your dog while you’re on vacation, another option is to leave your pup with someone she already knows and loves.

If you have a nearby family member or neighbor you trust, you can pay them to stop by a couple times a day and take care of your dog. This is a great solution for shorter trips or if you have friends or family members nearby who get along perfectly with your pup.
