5 Tips for Training Your New Puppy

Who doesn’t love puppies? They’re adorable, and they add so much excitement and love to your life. And puppy breath? I can’t get enough of it!

However, getting a pup to behave can definitely challenge you, which is why I recommend investing in professional training as soon as you bring your new baby home.

There are also a few things you can start working on right away with your pup. Don’t wait to start working on these tips, and be sure to include the entire family in the puppy’s training.

5 Tips for Training Your New Puppy

1. Remember Positive Reinforcement

First, the most important thing to remember is positive reinforcement. Reward your puppy when she does something good. The more the puppy is rewarded for good behavior, the more likely she will behave well when you give a command.

Negative reinforcement such as swatting puppy with a rolled up newspaper has never gotten positive results. Unless you want to make your dog fearful of you (and who wants that?!), stay away from physical punishments and negative responses.

2. Allow Your Dog to Interact with Other Dogs

It’s important to make sure your puppy interacts with other dogs from an early age. The more your puppy gets exposed to other dogs, the more comfortable she will become in the future. Plan a play date for your puppy with a friend’s dog and watch them interact. Of course, be sure to stay with both dogs and never leave them unattended.

3. Use Anti-Chewing Sprays

You can buy anti-chewing sprays to discourage your dog from chewing on furniture and other items. It typically doesn’t take long for a puppy to learn what’s off limits when you use these sprays.

If you don’t want to buy a spray, try using apple cider vinegar. Dogs don’t like the taste of it, so it’s usually very effective for discouraging chewing. Consider lightly spraying your furniture, and even your shoes and other items that puppy is prone to chew. These sprays can help keep that stylish new pair of boots safe from a puppy who loves to chew.

4. Start Crate Training

Start crate training your puppy as soon as possible, and by “as soon as possible”, I mean the day you bring your pup home. The sooner she becomes comfortable in the crate, the sooner she will see it as a positive experience.

One tip is to act super excited when your puppy goes into the crate to make her feel happy and secure. Make sure she thinks of the crate as a good place, rather than somewhere she goes to be punished. A way to do this is to keep them comfy, so put a dog bed in the crate to do this.

5. Be Patient

You must have patience when training your new puppy. No puppy will transform into the perfect dog overnight, so stay calm when your pup chews things and has potty accidents. It’s going to take a whole lotta time and patience, but you’ll get there. All this training will be worth it in the end.

Puppy Training

Dogs truly are a woman’s best friend! These tips for training your new puppy will ease the transition for both of you. Soon enough, your puppy will steal your heart and become a beloved member of the family.

Remember to engage the entire family in the puppy’s training. Even kids can help train a new puppy!
