There She Grows, Earth Day and Cloud Farm

What’s new in the world of green lifestyle this April? We keep you up to do date with the latest ideas, trends and news.

Fashion to pack: There She Grows

The new collection that British fashion designer Stella McCartney showed at Paris Fashion Week in March is blazing a trail for high end brands in the world of responsible fashion merchandising. The show, which took place at the Opera Garnier on the 4th of March, featured a range of upcycled garments as part of McCartney’s new campaign to protect the Leuser Ecosystem, which is an area of endangered forest in North Sumatra, Indonesia.

Entitled There She Grows, pieces from the Fall/Winter 2019 collection had been created using clothing that was headed for landfill. From a floor-length dress made from strips of vintage t shirts to a pair of boots made in collaboration with Hunter (described by Stella as possibly ‘the most sustainable ever made’), each piece had been meticulously constructed from materials that would have otherwise been thrown away.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, several celebrities, including Gwyneth Paltrow and Oprah have already pledged their allegiance to the cause, which will help to save the endangered wildlife of the Indonesian forest.

Event to attend: Earth Day

April 22nd marks this year’s Earth Day - a global annual event that helps raise awareness and take action on some of the most pressing environmental issues of the time. As 2020 will mark the 50th anniversary of the yearly event, the network is ramping up its mission and calling on people around the world to help them reach their target of 3 billion acts of green being carried out.

This year’s theme, Protect Our Species, aims to turn people’s attention to the species that are currently threatened by environmental damage and global warming, such as bees, elephants, coral reefs and whales and help to prevent them from going extinct. To find out ways in which you can get involved or to get ideas on creating your own Act of Green, visit the website here.

Place to go: A surf retreat in Nicaragua

If you’re a woman and surfing has always been on your list of skills to learn, book on to the Cloud Farm Women’s Surf Retreat in San Juan Del Sur (Nicaragua). Created by women, the retreat offers a chance to experience Nicaragua’s excellent surf whilst staying athletic Chicabrava’s Cloud Farm - a 500 acre estate overlooking the town.

Each morning you’ll head out to surf lessons and follow that up with a daily yoga practice and meals made from the organic produce grown on the farm. You might not be a pro at the beginning of the week but if you watch your daily training videos (which are included) you’ll see the huge improvement by the end.

As it’s low season and the weather is still fine, April makes the ideal time of year to go.

Brand to know: Ksenia Schnaider from Kiev

Ksenia Schnaider is the luxury eco jeans brand you didn’t know you needed until now. Each piece in its preppy, youthful collection is made using recycled materials. The duo behind the brand only use denim found in flea markets in Kiev, Ukraine, and do most of the upcycling themselves.

Though jeans may seem like a neutral staple, the designs from Ksenia Schnaider are here to make some noise. Favourites of Bella Hadid and Dua Lipa, get ready to rethink your idea of what denim classics should look like and fall in love with this style hero all over again.
